Julia Obermaier: What We Keep
Stenen står i centrum för Julia Obermaiers konstnärskap. Med ett lekfullt formspråk och stor hantverksskicklighet fångar hon det vardagligt flyktiga – som en utsuddad tanke eller en snabbt nedskriven hälsning – och förevigar det i sten.

I utställningen What We Keep på Galleri Smedjan samlas spår av det som blir kvar, som fragment och skatter från barndomen. De vardagliga föremålen har befriats från sin ursprungliga funktion och i förvandlingen från det flyktiga till det förstenade väcks minnen av lukter, ljud och känslor till liv, som troféer att bära vidare.
Vernissage: torsdag 6 aug kl. 17-19.
Artist talk: tisdag 25 augusti kl. 16 på Tegelmagasinet, Gomorron Östersund.
Utställningen visas till och med lördag 5 september 2026.
Utställningen arrangeras med stöd av Kulturrådet, Region Jämtland Härjedalen och IASPIS, Konstnärsnämndens internationella program för bild och form.
Galleri Smedjan Artist in Residens
Julia Obermaier (Tyskland) är den första internationella gästkonstnären i Galleri Smedjans nystartade Artist in Residensprogram och kommer att vistas i Jämtland i fem veckor i augusti-september 2026. Galleri Smedjan AIR 2026 fokuserar på konstnärlig utveckling och att stärka lokalt verksamma utövares internationella nätverk.
Galleri Smedjan AIR 2026 arrangeras i samarbete med Gomorron Östersund, med stöd av Region Jämtland Härjedalen, Kulturrådet och IASPIS, Konstnärsnämndens internationella program för bild och form.
Julia Obermaier
Julia Obermaier (f. 1989) är smyckekonstnär baserad i Kempten, Tyskland. Hon har en kandidatexamen från University of Applied Sciences Trier, Department Idar-Oberstein samt en masterexamen från Munich University of Applied Sciences i Tyskland, 2019. Obermaier har tilldelats flera utmärkelser, bland annat vid Cheongju Craftbiennale 2025 och LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize 2022.

Stone lies at the heart Julia Obermaier’s artistic practice. With playful forms and exceptional craftsmanship, she renders everyday objects and fleeting moments – such as an erased thought or a hastily written note – in stone, transforming the ephemeral into something enduring. In this transformation, memory takes on a material presence, evoking touch, sound, smell, and lived experience, bringing what once seemed past into the present.
The exhibition What We Keep gathers works that trace what remains: fragments carried forward from early experience – our treasures from childhood. Freed from their original function, these familiar objects become quiet echoes of lived moments, immortalized in stone.
Exhibition opening: Thursday August 6th, 17.00–19.00.
Artist talk: Tuesday August 25th, 16.00 at Tegelmagsinet, in collaboration with Gomorron Östersund.
The exhibition is on show until September 5th 2026.

Galleri Smedjan Artist in Residence
Julia Obermaier (Germany) is the first international guest artist to participate in Galleri Smedjan’s newly established Artist in Residence programme. She will be based in Jämtland for five weeks in August – September 2026. Galleri Smedjan AIR 2026 focuses on artistic development while strengthening the international networks of locally based artists.
Galleri Smedjan AIR 2026 is organized in collaboration with Gomorron Östersund, with support from the Swedish Arts Council, Region Jämtland Härjedalen and IASPIS, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee´s International Programme for Visual and Applied Arts.
Julia Obermaier
Julia Obermaier (b. 1989) is a jewellery artist based in Kempten, Germany. She studied at the University of Applied Sciences Trier, Campus Idar-Oberstein (BFA), and at Munich University of Applied Sciences, where she received her MA in 2019. Her work has received several international distinctions, including awards and recognition at the Cheongju Craft Biennale 2025 and the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize 2022.
